My own grandmother was ideologically indistinguishable from Oswald Mosley and, even a few years ago, would probably have been happy to join the Ku Klux Klan if they’d allowed rubber sheets.

I think it was Len Deighton who noted (if not in quite so many words) that, when Britain stood alone in 1940, she stood on the shoulders of several hundred million wogs.

This issue is not about foreign policy (thought not everything about our foreign policy is bad, such as aid policy) it is about having general pride in society, improving social cohesion and community relations, and ensuring we all continue to want to pay for services and look after one another, care about our communities and institutions.

British imperial history is loathed throughout the world, but as a society we are a hugely respected country that has been are the forefront of techological advances and is famous for having one of the best systems, and most tolerant people, in the world. That's why so many refugees and immigrants want to come here - they obviously see something about us that you do not.

There's nothing wrong with reminding ourselves that we are very lucky to live here and should not take things for granted. In fact I think it's very healthy. I don't where you live, but if you take pride in your local area then you will immediately feel better about yourself. Try it and see.
